How to land a job as a remote AWS DevOps Engineer in 12 weeks or less

Are you thinking about cross-training as a cloud specialist? If so, it’s time to learn how you could qualify as an AWS DevOps Engineer in just 12 weeks or less, even if you don’t have any prior experience with AWS.

That’s right – 12 weeks or less. What’s more, as the world is undergoing a digital revolution, more companies than ever before are offering high-paying remote roles in the cloud. Meaning, if you work as an AWS DevOps Engineer, you could fit your life around your work, not the other way around.

Furthermore, AWS DevOps Engineers can earn up to $192,000 per year in the US and £91,250 per year in the UK, according to the latest Jefferson Frank Careers and Hiring Guide, rising significantly once you’ve got a few years of experience and some AWS certifications under your belt.

1. Get AWS-certified before you start looking for a job

Whether or not you already have experience with AWS, it’s a really good idea to get AWS-certified before you start looking for a new remote job. AWS certifications will make your CV stand out and give you a competitive edge when applying for jobs.

Amazon Web Services first introduced their AWS Certification Program back in 2013. Their certifications serve as validation that you are an AWS cloud expert. Recent research carried out by Enterprise Strategy Group shows that 91% of companies agree that having employees who are AWS-certified increased innovation within their organization. So clearly, hiring managers and business leaders see AWS certifications as an asset, with some even offering AWS training schemes as part of the job package.

What AWS certifications should you take?

There are currently 11 certifications offered by AWS, ranked as Foundational, Associate, and Expert level. Additionally, there are five specialty certifications that cover more niche areas of AWS, such as security or machine learning.

If you cross-train with Revolent, you could earn your first certifications in just a few weeks. And the best part? We’ll cover the full cost of your AWS certification exams and your training, so you can fully focus on becoming a cloud professional, and earn while you learn.

If you prefer to go it alone, as a starting point, we recommend creating an account with AWS. This will give you a 50% discount on a future exam, as well as access to a load of handy exam guides and resources. Plus, this is where you’ll hold your digital badge when you pass an exam!

If you’re completely new to AWS…

Consider taking the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification. It will give you foundational knowledge of Amazon Web Services, including how AWS can help companies become more cost-effective, and how the tools within the AWS ecosystem work together.   Anyone can take this certification. However, before you attempt the exam, you should have a basic understanding of IT, knowledge of core AWS concepts and a good sense of how the cloud and AWS services can impact a business. Since the cost of this exam is $100, and you’ll only get 90 minutes to answer 65 questions on core AWS cloud concepts and services, as well as their uses and applications within a business, it’s a good idea to get some prep done first. Luckily, there are a number of free AWS training resources that can help you get exam ready.

2. Start looking for an AWS DevOps Engineer role

Once you’ve got your certifications in the bag, consider what other skills you may have that AWS DevOps Engineers need, from your technical aptitude to essential soft skills and consultancy savvy.

Be sure to make all these skills stand out on your job application and CV. And – it goes without saying – do your research about the company you’re applying for, and tailor your CV and cover letter to highlight the skills and values they’re after.

3. Familiarise and reference these skills on your CV
