How Ariel became an AWS-certified Software Engineer with Revolent

Who is Ariel Steger?

Based in Fairfield, Connecticut, Ariel Steger was a luxury car appraiser with an interest in data analytics.

Today, Ariel is an Associate AWS Sofware Engineer at a market-leading legal firm, completing her second on-site placement with one of Revolent’s AWS clients.

So, how did she get there?

I had no experience with AWS, but it was something that I was personally interested in. I completed my Master’s degree where I mostly did Python, business data analytics, and data visualization, followed by a coding boot camp, where I learned a bunch of coding languages within the space of just three months.

Looking to start a career in AWS, Ariel joined Revolent’s intensive training and placement program—and was soon off to a flying start.

Revolent’s program prepared me for my position by helping me to obtain my first two AWS certifications with AWS trainers, along with practical application. So, by the time I started by work placement, I knew enough to hit the ground running and make a meaningful impact within the first six months.

With his new coding skills under his belt, Chris was keen to see where a career in development could take him. But after graduating from his coding bootcamp at the University of Utah right as the pandemic began, he found it difficult to find work in the ever-changing landscape of 2020.

What did Ariel's AWS training look like?

Ariel joined us and immediately started training on our AWS Careers Program, where she received:

Fully-funded training led by our AWS instructors, with >50% time spent on practical application and real-life projects to put her certification knowledge to practice

Regular check-ins

Regular meetings with Revolent’s Customer Success Team while on placement to identify areas for ongoing professional development

Consultancy and soft skills training

Consultancy skills training to help Ariel solve on-the-spot business challenges and further boost her knowledge around navigating within a
global, fast-paced environment

She also gained the following professional certifications:

The courses we deliver include capstone projects that enable Revols to truly test the knowledge they have gained during their training, while incorporating consultancy skills and professional skills development. This means that, once they graduate from the program, the Revols are able to start working on real projects for real clients.

Working on-site as an Associate AWS Software Engineer

Ariel was placed with a multinational law firm to work as an Associate AWS Software Engineer. In this role, Ariel uses her new-found knowledge to help the company do things more efficiently using cloud technology.

No two days are the same, I’ll tell you that—especially within this type of industry! Every day brings a new project with it, which is exciting. This wide variety of work I’ve been exposed to “ has allowed me to quickly build out my skill set. I went from just Python and AWS to now learning Quickbase, Contract Express, and AWS Amplify. Every day, I learn a piece of something new to accomplish the tasks the team needs.

Among the projects she’s tackled to date is one that has revolutionized the way the firm processes its documents.

The most meaningful project I’ve been a part of is transforming how our department uses AWS to translate and transcribe evidence and ocuments for our attorneys. The Python script I created with my teammates allowed us to eliminate several steps in the process, and we can now turn the jobs around in less than an hour. This project has had a lot of positive feedback, noy only from our immediate superiors, but also from other teams who depend on this type of work getting done quickly.

Setting Ariel up to succeed on-site

Cross-training into a new technology is no easy feat, which is why Revolent provides not only technical training, but also help with soft skills, enabling our Revols to hit the ground running in their first placement.

Revolent is great at providing you with labs, tech tests, and exercises, so you get the practical knowledge, on top of your certifications, before being placed on a client’s site. I’ve never felt unsupported or alone in my journey here. This has been a great way to jumpstart my career as an AWS Software Engineer.

And even as Ariel is doing great things and growing her confidence as a cloud professional, she knows that support is always at hand whenever she needs it.

Revolent’s Learning and Development Coaches check in on me all the time and support me along the way, which is great. They want you to continue your education and get more advanced AWS certifications, so they provide lots of support to help you with your learning journey, even as you’re completing your work placement. While working on-site I still get access to Teams chats and my AWS mentors. If I have any questions, or need more training, I can always contact my manager or my mentors to receive the help I need.

What’s next for Ariel?

Thanks to the skills she’s learned throughout her training and work experience as an AWS Software Engineer, Ariel feels ready to take on new challenges and develop more specialist knowledge. She’s also keen to help others start their own rewarding careers in AWS by mentoring those who are cross-training into the industry, just like she did.

Two or three years from now, I want to be able to mentor those who are starting out their careers, as well as learn new technologies as they become available. With ChatGPT becoming available to the public, I would like to learn more AI tech to help with complete automation of certain daily tasks.
