Choosing your Salesforce career path: Administrator

Admin is a great place to start in Salesforce. Not only is it a respected, highly-valued role in its own right, but it’s also a great springboard into other careers within the ecosystem. Some of the best Developers and Architects around started out as great Admins. Choosing your Salesforce career path: Developer

The Salesforce Developer skillset is one of the most in demand roles within the ecosystem, and was recently rated one of the best jobs in the world. So what do they do?

Primarily, they are the go-to coding experts for any Salesforce project, and can be found performing tasks by coding, automating repetitive tasks with code, and building applications…you guessed it, with code!

Just like Admins, Developers are responsible for customizing the Salesforce platform but, unlike Admins, they will provide unique coded solutions, as well as declarative ones.

Salesforce Developer roles and responsibilities

With this focus on building coded solutions, the skillset required to be a Salesforce Developer is definitely more technical. So you’ll need a good range of experience in tech to succeed here.

Generally, the best Salesforce Developers love solving problems, are able to present multiple solutions to fix issues, and a background in something like IT.

Of course, you don’t need to be an expert to learn something new – if you have a background in IT and a passion for developing a career in Salesforce, then becoming a Salesforce Developer is probably right for you.

From a technical standpoint, programs like ours that cross-train new Salesforce Developers typically require a minimum of 12months’ experience in object orientated programming in a commercial setting. As well as experience in at least one full software development lifecycle.

Having a good understanding of the TTD (Test Driven Development) will also stand you in good stead, as will the ability to clearly communicate with colleagues and present proposed solutions to a team.

The Salesforce Developer career path has a wealth of opportunities for fantastic career progression. It’s a crucial role within Salesforce and a skillset that can be flexed across different disciplines, roles, and specialties.

As a Salesforce Developer you can choose to progress into more senior roles, such as Senior Developer, Architect, or Senior Architect. Or even train to help teach other people how to learn Salesforce.
