From hospitality to Salesforce DevOps Consultant: Chris McGivney’s story

Who is Chris McGivney?

For most of his career, Chris McGivney worked in hospitality. He learned to code while spending time at home looking after his first child. Then, he chose to cross-train with Revolent.

Why did Chris choose Revolent's Salesforce Careers Program?

With his new coding skills under his belt, Chris was keen to see where a career in development could take him. But after graduating from his coding bootcamp at the University of Utah right as the pandemic began, he found it difficult to find work in the ever-changing landscape of 2020.
“I graduated right before the pandemic started, so it was a really tough time to start a career. I had to convince people to take a chance on me, but I didn’t have a college degree to attach to my technical skills.”
Job hunting was taking up a lot of Chris’ time and despite his strong technical proficiency in coding, he was struggling to secure his first full-time job as a Developer. Through our streamlined Talent Acquisition process, we quickly assessed his impressive technical skills and found a career program that suited his goals perfectly.

Chris went on to receive:

Paid training

Led by our Salesforce-certified instructors, with >50% of time spent on practical application and real-life projects to put his certification knowledge into practice

Regular check-ins

Regular meetings with Revolent’s Customer Success Team while on placement to identify areas for ongoing professional development

Consultancy and soft skills training

Consultancy skills training to help him solve on-the-spot business challenges and to further grow knowledge around navigating within a global, fast-paced environment

“Before Revolent, I was constantly interviewing and tailoring my résumé. It was basically a full-time job! But then I found Revolent. I wrote some technical documentation and presented it to them, before going through a couple of interview stages—then they offered me a position. It was a long time coming, but I finally got to move out of hospitality and into development!”

What did his Salesforce training look like?

Chris joined our Salesforce Developer Careers Program and immediately dived into his funded training. He learned about Object-oriented programming, the Salesforce ecosystem, and how to tailor a Salesforce instance in a live business setting. In addition to his certification training, Chris also received consultancy skills training to help him apply his new knowledge to real, on-the-job challenges. He also received a career development plan and personal Success Coach, to help him on his journey to becoming a world-class Salesforce Developer.

During his training, Chris earned 4 certifications:

Working on-site as a Salesforce DevOps Consultant

Once his training was complete, Chris worked on-site at a leading CRM Software Company as a Salesforce DevOps Consultant and Implementation Manager.

Here, he helps clients to deliver code in an efficient and trackable way from one environment to the next. At this organization, his main duties include helping clients understand software, meet goals, and keep track of the different stages of their implementation.

Chris’ experience as a Salesforce DevOps Consultant

“I enjoy working at my placement organization a lot. Even though I’m remote, I’m incredibly active on our Slack channels. so there’s a lot of collaboration, which really brings me into the fold.

Plus, they bring us in from time to time for in-person meetings, which are lovely. I really feel like an appreciated part of the team. It’s fantastic!”
